Community Activities
Hickory Creek homes are small neighborhood homes. We recognize that our homes are also valuable community resources and we treasure our close connections to the communities we serve. You might see us cooking lunch for local safety officials, hosting a neighborhood Easter egg hunt or working with a local elementary school. The point is – you’ll see us. We are neighbors taking care of neighbors:
- Every year Hickory Creek at Connersville honors those who protect and serve the community by offering a luncheon for public safety employees. The City of Connersville Fire Department wrote: “Please accept this letter as a big ‘Thank You’ for the complimentary meal and celebration of ‘National Nursing Home Week’. The food was fantastic! It’s nice to have such thoughtful people in our community. Our best wishes to you and your staff.”
- The staff and residents of Hickory Creek at Scottsburg host a community Easter Egg Hunt. One participant noted: “The Bunny was adorable, the candy delicious and the children had a wonderful time. Our oldest granddaughter found the golden egg for her age group and loved getting her picture taken with the Easter Bunny.”
- Hickory Creek at Connersville held a community ceremony honoring veterans. About 600 people in the local community attended and a Fayette County Color Guard member raised the new flag.
- The town of Gaston demonstrated its close ties with Hickory Creek’s home for the developmentally disabled. When a severe ice storm hit the small community the volunteer fire department made sure that the home had whatever it needed. While power was out during the storm the Johnson family (longtime owners and operators of the town’s gas station) came to the home in the middle of the night to bring fuel for the emergency generator. Each year staff from the Hickory Creek Healthcare Foundation home office in Indianapolis travel to all of the organization’s locations to cook up some fun for the community. That added up to twenty fish fries in 2008 – a lot of miles and a lot of fish! Residents, their families and everyone in the local community are welcomed to each home for a free social event that may celebrate community appreciation, an open house or some sort of special event or celebration at each home.
- All of Hickory Creek Healthcare Foundation’s nursing homes have partnered with Shriner’s Hospitals to collect pull tabs from cans. The tabs are made of aluminum which is recycled and sold, thereby helping the planet and the hospitals at the same time. Each home tries to outdo the others – in fact, our winning home in Rochester managed to collect 307.5 pounds of tabs out of a total of 779.6 pounds! (Source: Reported by the Rochester Star Press)
