What is Medicaid?

It’s a health insurance program provided by the State and Federal government. It differs from Medicare as eligibility is based on financial need and is not an automatic entitlement. Additionally, each State runs its own Medicaid program, whereas the Federal government runs Medicare.

Who is Eligible?

Whether or not a person is eligible for Medicaid will depend on the State where he or she lives but, generally speaking, the following are eligible:

  • Low income persons over age 65.
  • Low-income persons who are blind or disabled.
  • Moderate-income persons who are over age 65, blind or disabled and if medical expenses are greater than the difference between income and the Medicaid guideline.

What Does Medicaid Cover for the Elderly?

  • For the Aged, Blind or Disabled – Medicaid will normally cover physician services, hospitalization, prescription medicines, transportation, therapy and nursing home care.
  • Long Term Nursing Home Care – Medicaid can help pay for the cost of care in a long-term care home as long as you meet income and resource requirements and need care for at least 30 days.
  • Prescription Drugs – Medicaid can help with Medicare Part D Prescription Drug premiums, co-insurance and deductibles.
  • Medicare Expenses – Medicaid can help with Medicare expenses such as premiums, co-insurance and deductibles under Medicare Part B.
