Volunteer Opportunities
What Can a Volunteer do to Help?
We are always interested in hearing from volunteers who can assist with our activities programs that include:
- Indoor and outdoor social activities.
- Arts, crafts, music, drama and educational programs.
- Exercise.
- One-on-one and group activities.
- Bringing the local community to the residents.
We also need volunteers who can read to a resident or, on a more informal basis, regularly visit a resident who has no family (an “adopt a grandparent” type of commitment).
For the protection of our residents, we do ask that you give two personal references.
What Happens on the First Day of Volunteering?
Orientation will consist of completing an application; reviewing company policies and procedures; guidance on treating our residents with dignity and respect; a tour of the nursing home and introduction to our staff members.
Some Do’s and Don’ts
- Volunteers will be asked to take a tuberculin test (we will provide the testing).
- Volunteers under the age of 18 will need parental consent to participate in volunteering and to take a tuberculin test.
- Volunteers will be asked to sign a confidentiality statement regarding resident health information.
- Owing to the fragility of many of our elderly residents and to legal considerations, there are some duties that cannot be performed by volunteers, such as:
- Daily care activities (bathing, dressing and feeding).
- Positioning and ambulation.
- Range of motion exercises.
- Transportation outside the facility.
- Errands or any other type of vehicular activity.
Please contact the home in which you are interested in volunteering.
